01:28 pm: This I love . . .

I love the autumn season. I have been singing the praises of this autumn weather the past few weeks. Having lived my entire life in a Midwestern US State I have come to look forward to the beauty of the autumn days. The warmth of the sun on autumn afternoons with temperatures that are ideal sweater days, which are then transformed into crisp, cool evenings. Evenings that remind you of the seasonal change we are going through.

The visual beauty of the season is so enjoyable when you witness the green leafed trees being changed almost in front of your eyes to multicolored spectacles. Brilliant yellows, reds and browns replace an otherwise drab green landscape and are intensified when intertwined with the dark green of an occasional evergreen bush that won't ever change its color.

Also, late in the afternoon, on many autumn days, the sky with its gray threatening clouds adds yet another brilliant dimension in black and white to the accompany the colorful spectacle of the season.

I love the warmth of sun in the summer, the beauty of newly fallen snow in the winter and the floral rebirth in the spring, but none of those can match the beauty, warmth and comfort provided by autumn. I love the autumn season.

Then as quickly as it appears you awake one morning and it's all gone! The rains and winds of the previous night have stripped the trees of their beauty and left in its place on the ground a colorful patchwork quilt of leaves. Adding insult to injury the comfortable sweater weather is gone and the temperatures drop to freezing and hover around the middle 30's. Your eyes absorb the shock of the missing color and your body absorbs the shock of the frigid weather. Yes, it is cold this morning, but yes, this is autumn.  I love it!

Henry David Thoreau - “The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.”

That is one of my favorite quotes because it reminds me to believe in myself and have confidence in my abilities.   It also reminds me that if I want to be a leader I have to be willing to go it alone. If I must wait for another then by definition I'm not a leader but rather a follower.

04:09 pm: You've Got Mail - - -

I always get a warm feeling when I open my mailbox and see those two special words, "New mail." I can just imagine the equally great feeling others get when they open their mailbox and hear the words, "You've got mail."

Emails are the next best thing to - - - well, the next best thing to the second best thing! Especially when it is an email from a special someone, a friend or a relative. When it is an email from someone close that you haven't talked to in a long time or an email that brings good news or an exciting invitation or a surprise email from someone who wanted to just say "Hi!"

Emails are special.

Then there are the times when I open my mailbox and get excited to see those two words "New mail" only to discover that it isn't an email from a friend. It's an email from the "Fly by Night Insurance Company" who wants to sell me insurance or "Middle of Nowhere College" that wants to give me a college degree.

Spam! I dislike seeing those junk emails in my mailbox.

However, the other day I was home and went to the curb to pick up my snail mail. Looking through my snail mail I discovered that the first piece was junk mail, the second was too, as was the third, fourth and fifth. The remaining two pieces of snail mail were bills (not technically junk mail). There wasn't one greeting from a special someone, friend or relative. That's when I realized that the occasional piece of junk mail in my email mailbox wasn't so bad in comparison.

Thanks to all who have taken the time to send me an email and cause me to be greeted by those two special words, "new mail."

You've made my day!

By the way, my email address is wonderssmile@yahoo.com
